Bori Bunder @ Platform 8 | Oct-Dec 2016

The seventh edition of [en]counters is presented in partnership with Art Together Ltd (Hong Kong), Avid Learning, Institute of Contemporary Indian Art – The Arts Trust (India), TAG Contemporary (Italy) with the support of Hong Kong Arts Development Council, The Italian Institute of Culture Embassy of Italy to India powered by Lavazza India and sponsored by Turkish Airlines & UBI Banca.

Bori Bunder @ Platform 8, takes its name from Mumbai’s first railway station, the Bori Bunder. It once functioned as a storehouse for goods traded to the British before it became a carrier for passengers in 1853. The first-ever ride from Bombay to Thane marked the beginning of the Great Indian Peninsular Railway (GIPR). It also heralded the opening of the city’s rail network and in its honor, was given the name Victoria Terminus (VT).

Designed by Frederick William Stevens in Late Italian Medieval Gothic and Indian palace architecture, VT symbolized a bastion of commerce, agriculture, engineering, science and progress. It also became a symbol of what Bombay was and what it was projected to become.

Later in 1996, the station was once again renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and in 2004, it acquired the UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
Mumbai’s railway carries over 7.5 million commuters every day with local trains operating every 4 minutes with a rest time of just 90 minutes before the first workers start to enter the city at 4.15am.

To launch the 7th edition of ArtOxygen’s annual art festival [en]counters, contemporary Indian and international artists take as their point of interrogation the Bori Bunder, their works emerging as a point of reflection and understanding of the connection between the railway, its people and the city. Through their interventions that travel to various sites across Mumbai, they question the value of this relationship within these transitory and most diverse containers of daily migration, movement and mayhem.

Participating artists in the festival are Andrea Caretto, Peggy Chan, Wong Chun Hoi, Teja Gavankar, Owais Husain, Wong Ka Ying, Emilio Leofreddi, Pradeep L Mishra, Raffaella Spagna, Chun Yiu Wai, Mak Ying Tung. Bori Bunder @ Platform 8 will take place from 8 October till 30 November 2016.
