Essence-Function
HAEINSA ART PROJECT - SOUTH KOREA - 2013
Within the temple gates, a temporary construction functions as a pharmacy and herbarium of natural plants. It also acts as a site for learning and a meeting place for local inhabitants and visitors. Made of found materials and assembled in a semi-circular domed shape, the herbarium houses herbs, seeds and remedies, collected at the surroundings.
Public sessions discussing the characteristics of the various plants' species and their uses becomes a point of departure where local farmers recount stories and give us a peep into their everyday practices, concerns, vision and knowledge. Essence-Function initiates a dialogue between western scientific botanic classification and eastern spiritual doctrines, where both are challenged to develop a system to be transmitted.
Interested in the harmonic complexity of biological forms and processes, his work addresses connections and cooperation, from microorganisms to social systems, and from traditional art languages such as drawing to collaborative agro-ecological projects, actions, and cooperatives.
